But in the past four weeks, his audience has become international. YouTube clips of his performance have collected more than 500,000 clicks since early July.

The man who galvanized
Visit Reverb for additional photos and a recent video performance. (Photos by Evan Semon, Special to The Denver Post )his career is also a local fan: Denver musician and producer Tyler Ward, who first heard "this amazing voice" one evening after having dinner downtown.

Ward walked toward the singer and found a man whose appearance suggested a streetworn, dreadlocked version of actor Don Cheadle. Scott's forearms were raked with scars, muddled by tattoos and stubbled with knotted souvenirs of the untreated infections common among the chronically homeless.

But his eyes were clear and direct, and in his backpack was a copy of "Devils of Loudun," Aldous Huxley's nonfiction novel about demonic possession. Scott's voice was steady and powerful as he sang.

"I listened for 20 minutes and started talking to him," Ward says.
Scott gave him a precis of his recent life, hopping from one homeless shelter to another.

Ward was sold. He teamed up with Trey Noran, a minister who helps Denver's homeless through outreach group His Love Street, and arranged to record an extended-play disc of covers called "Live From the 16th Street Mall." Sales would go to His Love Street to help Scott and other homeless people. The videos went viral. To date, Scott's take on "Purple Rain" has earned a half-million views.
. The son of Nigerian-born pediatrician and author Festus Adebonojo and Episcopal priest Mary Adebonojo, Scott was born in San Francisco. He grew up in Philadelphia, spent a year or two at a boarding school in Nigeria and returned to the U.S. His cousin taught him to play the guitar.

"I sang for fun, but I didn't think I had a talent for music," he said.
He listened to music by Cab Calloway, Robert Johnson, Duke Ellington, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Scott Joplin "because the music I tend to listen to is out (for) at least 10 years."
After high school, Scott went to a community college near Sacramento, Calif., "the most boring place to live in California," he
Special to The Denver Post )said, "but ever since I'd moved back from Nigeria, I felt like a fish out of water anyway, like someone who wasn't American. Americans are, in a lot of ways, proud to be idiots."

To the dismay of his parents — his father graduated from Harvard; his mother from Yale — he studied automotive technology, thinking about becoming a mechanic.

At about the same time, between 1986 and 1989, Scott embraced the Grateful Dead. He joined the small legion of Deadheads following the band from concert to concert. When he recounts the 1980s, it's as "the year Jerry (Garcia) got sick," or "the year a bunch of shows got canceled."

After getting caught selling LSD at a Dead concert in Massachusetts, he served some prison time. That launched a cycle of using and selling drugs, getting arrested and serving time — something he describes as "catching a case."
He caught more cases in Florida, in Minnesota, in California and, starting in 1996, caught a half-dozen more cases in Colorado. Most were misdemeanors, but from 1998 to 2006, he served a prison term and then spent time in a halfway house, on drug-related felony charges.

"When I got out in 2006, I had a stack of music I'd written in prison but very little in the way of marketable skills," Scott said.

He moved to a unit in a run-down Aurora apartment building riddled with bedbugs but lost his room after falling behind in rent. He took his guitar to downtown Denver to busk on the 16th Street Mall. At night, he slept at homeless shelters or squatted in an abandoned building.

Scott became something of an institution on the downtown mall and beyond. The Sunday brunch crowd at Racine's, a short hike from downtown, knew his music and sometimes gave him money.
"Our guests seemed to really enjoy his music because he was so good," said Lee Goodfriend, one of Racine's owners. "And he was super-nice."

On good days, he brought in lots of cash. But on bad days, he'd earn "maybe a dollar, and then a string would break," or someone would steal his guitar.
"I've been through half a dozen guitars," Scott said.
"The last one was stolen. I got this one from a church outreach."

A breakthrough
Then Tyler Ward approached him in late June. Would Scott give him permission to make a video of a couple of performances and post them on Tyler's Internet music channel?
"I was like, yeah, yeah, that sounds really cool, but I don't even have an e-mail address," Scott said. He was surprised when Ward chased him down a few days later, recording equipment in tow.
Ward wasted no time in making an extended play recording of Scott covering "What's Going On" and "Purple Rain."
hen he posted the videos, Scott's bluesy, sorrowful take on Prince's song got more than 507,000 clicks and more than 1,000 purchases through iTunes. Reporters started calling. Ward asked Noran, of His Love Street, to shepherd Scott's media inquiries and help Scott with logistics.

"When I gave Dred the checks from iTunes, I was a little worried," Noran said, "but when I asked him about the checks two days later, he pulled them out of his pocket. Someone else would've cashed them and spent it."
They deposited the money in a new bank account. Scott found an apartment in Aurora where he's staying temporarily. Lannie Garrett, whose Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret is a venue for edgy, unconventional music, arranged for Scott to perform there Sept. 28.
Interviews and articles began popping up on local media. CBN, the Christian Broadcasting Network, wanted an interview. CNN called, too.
So did Prince's legal representatives, telling Ward to take down Scott's version of "Purple Rain." That stopped the iTunes checks but also frustrated Scott's online fan base.

"I'm crying you guys because I want to buy his album and help him but I can't," wrote fffunfarm on Ward's YouTube channel.

"Get him off the streets."
Disappointed by the injunction, Scott is philosophical.

"You have to play songs that got a lot of airplay so people will say, 'Oh, that's my favorite song' and give you money. But I have my own music. One of the depressing things about the 20th century is the mass media saying if you haven't heard something on the radio, then it's not worth listening to."

Garrett plans to give him a chance to prove the mass media wrong. She worries a little about how Scott will handle the barrage of attention.

Earlier this year, Ted Williams, another homeless man, found himself a national celebrity when a YouTube video called him the Man With The Golden Voice. Williams received offers of radio jobs but quit rehab and fell into obscurity.

"I think sudden fame would be tough for anyone, but I think Dred would do OK, as long as it's about the music," Ward said.

DENVER (CBS4) – A homeless Denver man who plays regularly on the 16th Street Mall has made it onto iTunes.

David Adebonojo, who uses the performance name Dred Scott, moved to Denver sixteen years ago for the music scene. He found work and had an apartment. But then things went wrong. The apartment was infested by bed bugs.

“I couldn’t work because I wasn’t sleeping. Then I got behind in rent,” he told CBS4 on Friday from his performance spot on the mall.

Now he does what he loves full time, but income is inconsistent.

“I’ve come out here, set up, played, broke a string, made a dollar, and left. I’ve come out here, played, and made $300,” he said.
Three weeks ago local musician Tyler Ward stumbled onto Adebonojo’s talent.

“I had dinner on 16th street mall and right after I came outside I was walking outside and on the corner, I heard this amazing sound and was like, ‘Who is that?’” Ward told CBS4.
Joining forces with a Christian outreach group His Love Street, Ward shot a video for YouTube of Adebonojo performing. This week they got an EP of Dred Scott’s music on iTunes. It has already generated almost $2,000.
It wasn’t enough right away to take him off the streets, but Adebonojo is hopeful the help he’s getting to get his music heard will change his life for the better.
“That’s what these guys have done for me … you know, take my music and make it available to larger groups of people,” said Adebonojo, who says the Internet was the “next logical step” for him but he didn’t know enough about the web to figure out how to make it happen.

Ward, who runs an online independent label, would love to see Adebonojo get popular enough to be able to get off the streets and into clubs, and perhaps tour.
Adebonojo says his music is something akin to “anti-pop.”

Los Angeles has the highest street homeless population in the nation. Every day we see men, women and children without a place to call home. We don’t have to accept homelessness as an unsolvable problem. With your help we can end homelessness.

In 2011, we counted and estimated 69,340 homeless persons in Los Angeles County. Tabulating numbers is not the end goal – knowing who and where our homeless populations are allows us to target our resources more effectively to get people housed. The Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count is about building stronger communities where everyone is safe, secure and housed.

How homelessness is defined by HUD (The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development):

A homeless person is: An individual or family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and An individual or family who has a primary nighttime residence that is:

A supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations (including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing for the mentally ill);

An institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized; or
A public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, regular sleeping accommodations for human beings.
This term does not include any individual imprisoned or otherwise detained under an Act of Congress or a State law.

In the midst of high unemployment, the steady loss of affordable housing, and years of failed policies under the Bloomberg administration, an all-time high number of New Yorkers turned to homeless shelters last year and the New York City homeless shelter population is now larger than at any time since the City began keeping records.

An all-time record 119,553 homeless people - including 44,888 children - slept in municipal shelters in FY 2010, an 8 percent increase from the previous year and a 37 percent increase from FY 2002 when Mayor Bloomberg took office.

This includes a record 28,977 families, a 15 percent increase from the previous year and a remarkable 81 percent more than when Mayor Bloomberg took office.

And by the end of February of this year, the nightly census of homeless adults and children in the municipal shelter system - 39,542 people - reached the highest point ever recorded.

In the midst of this historic homelessness crisis, the Bloomberg administration's only response has been to defend its failed policies. Unlike previous New York City mayors from Ed Koch through Rudy Giuliani, Mayor Bloomberg refuses to use proven and cost-effective Federal housing programs to move homeless families from shelters to stable homes. Instead, for more than six years the Bloomberg administration has replaced proven Federal programs with a series of untested, time-limited subsidies like the recently-terminated Advantage program.

However, City data show that these flawed time-limited subsidies have forced thousands of formerly-homeless children and families back into the shelter system and homelessness, at tremendous expense to taxpayers.
Since the Bloomberg administration cut off homeless families from proven Federal housing programs and replaced them with time-limited subsidies like the Advantage program, more than twice as many formerly-homeless families enter the shelter system each year.

In the seven years before Mayor Bloomberg's misguided policy change, an average of 2,003 formerly-homeless "repeat families" entered the shelter system each year, but in the five years after the change, an average of 5,020 "repeat families" entered the shelter system each year, a remarkable 151 percent increase. And in FY 2010, an all-time record 6,294 "repeat families" entered the shelter system.

Before the Mayor's time-limited subsidies were implemented, only one in four families (25 percent) entering the shelter system was formerly-homeless, while now nearly half (47 percent) of all families entering the shelter system was once homeless

God demands His people to have compassion on others. Jesus' second comandment was "You shall love your nieghbor as thyself".
The word "nieghbor" doesn't just mean the guy who lives next door, it means EVERYONE!

Not just the people that you want to be kind to....not just the ones you like already and know already...but EVERYONE.

This is why God gets angry...we live in our own self-made worlds leaving God outside knocking on our door but we only hear His knock when we are going through something ourselves and need Him.
We get hurt and want to shut others off from our world...we can't see past our hurt
God loves us so much but we turn our heads from Him when it's not convenient...because when we turn our heads away from a fellow human being, we are turning away from God.

In the Bible it says God is a jealous God. He wants all our love...and he wants you to love everyone he created.

The Huffington Post is reporting that despite the growing number of women serving in the armed forces, female veterans are still less accepted on the home front. American communities more readily accept -- and offer help to -- male service members, while female veterans are left to navigate unemployment, homlessness, hunger, and physical and mental abuse alone after returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to the article, despite fighting and dying in wars, women are still not accorded the same level of respect as their male counterparts. There are some organizations, like U.S. Vets Initiative in California, that are trying to help female veterans, but they are few and far between.

Female veterans also face "a shocking amount" of sexual harassment and sexual assault, so many are returning with sexual trauma on top of post-traumatic stress disorder. Talk about being kicked while down. We have got to do more to protect women while they are abroad and to help them get back on their feet when they return home. For any veteran, male or female, to be living on the streets after serving this country is unacceptable.

I write this from the public library, a 40 minute walk from the homeless shelter where I now reside with my children. Not a victim of the recession, but of playing the hand of a full house, and being beaten out by a royal flush. I speak metaphorically.I did everything I could to resist being here, but in the end the weight of the world pressed down too hard. Failure at a certain task is easy to overcome,failure at life is the worst obstacle.

It's not truly a bad place.The staff is kind and caring and they focus not on why you came to be here, but how to help you move forward.

A very kind soul named Emily has been the glue to hold my shattered spirit together. Listening to me without judgement and letting me cry when the emotion is too much to contain.I always thought I would be the one to help homeless people, never the flip side.

Too many events in my life have made me numb and mistrustful. Now I rely on the kindness of strangers and I have to let pride fall by the wayside. This is so very difficult for me.

You never know when life will throw you a curve ball and you will end up like this.

I try to stay positive, especially around my kids. They need to see me smile. They need to know that things will be OK.

I save my tears for when they are asleep. My kids miss home, the one they knew for many years, and sometimes their emotions spill over, and it breaks my heart. Forward from here is to find a safe place, no easy task..

A place to lay their heads: Ministry to the homeless struggles during these times.

They are the cautionary tales, lost souls destroyed by drugs, mental illness, abandonment and hopelessness.They are the ones we cross the street to avoid, their hands outstretched and pleading, their eyes hollow, their clothes tattered, their appearance unsettling. It is because of them that we count our blessings.In passing and with a sharp twinge of guilt, we want to help, "if only we could."
Seth Murphy understands that feeling, but rather than walking by, he's doing something about it.

In July 2003, Murphy was working at a homeless shelter in Blue Mountain when it changed its focus and became a drug rehabilitation center. Many of those living at the shelter were once more put back on the streets.Murphy, along with a friend he'd been working alongside, took two of the men they had come to know and trust to stay temporarily at his mother's house in Oxford, where they slept on the back porch.

"That's how it all got started … kind of by accident," says Murphy, 36. "By the end of the week, we had seven homeless guys sleeping out on her porch. We were just supplying them with the basic needs — food, clothing and a place to lay their head."
Out of those humble beginnings, a ministry was born. Servant of Jesus Church and Shelter offers a second chance to men, women and children who are looking for a way to survive by getting off the streets and back on their feet.
"The homeless are really our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers. They are our children," Murphy says. "All they want are their lives back, and maybe a little respect along the way."

Tim Skinner met Murphy a few years ago while trying to find a suitable shelter for an estranged relative battling drug addiction. Everywhere he looked, Skinner found only dead ends. That was until he heard about Servant of Jesus Church.
"Seth will take the people no one else will," Skinner says. "He's just got a heart and a passion for helping people."Those include "several" veterans, the mentally ill, those battling drug addiction, the unemployed and several who are waiting on disability claims from the state.

In 2004, Murphy and his wife, Leigh, with the help of donations from friends, family and private entities as well as assistance from the Salvation Army, Center of Hope and Word Alive, moved the growing ministry into two buildings along McCoy Avenue in Blue Mountain — one for men, another for women and children. The ministry also has a third building along the same street that serves as a church, where everyone gathers for meals and weekly worship services."We've pretty much taken over the whole street," Murphy says with a slight laugh. "I'd like to see its name changed from McCoy Avenue to Jesus Way."
But times are tough and getting tougher.Relying heavily on donations from "regular working folks" who, because of the recent economic shift are finding it harder to give, maintaining Servant of Jesus has grown increasingly difficult. Those who live in the shelters are having trouble finding work, thus they can't give back. Meanwhile, the bills are piling up, and sometimes it's a struggle just keeping the electricity on. "But we're still here, doing whatever it takes," Murphy says.

Providing shelter for the homeless isn't Murphy's lone battle. He also has kidney problems and is on dialysis three times a week. During one of his visits to Dr. V.M. Reddy, who practices internal medicine at the Anniston Wellness Center, Murphy started talking about the shelter and its many needs. Reddy, who is from India, was intrigued. "This is our community now," Reddy says. "(The homeless) are part of our familym and I wanted to help any way that I can."

After viewing a video Murphy compiled about his ministry, Reddy made a donation that was instrumental in helping Murphy open one of the buildings he rents on McCoy. Several of Murphy's residents have since become patients of Reddy's."Seth's doing the best he can," Reddy says. "The community needs to also step forward. Seth's doing the hard work. It's easy to give money, but to actually go out and help these people … that's impressive, and should be rewarded."

In 2010, over 20 percent of young Iraq and Afghanistan U.S. war veterans were unemployed, while over 75,000 were homeless. In addition, the Department of Veterans Affairs reported a spike in suicides last year of vets between the ages of 18 and 29. This is because of multiple deployments, time away from families, the brutality we witness inflicted on the occupied peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan and the complete neglect of our mental health when we return.

When we come back from fighting for a lie that only benefits Wall Street and the banks, we enter a different kind of war. After deploying and dodging bullets, IEDs and indirect fire, we find ourselves dodging unemployment lines, foreclosures and a dysfunctional Veterans Affairs system where it takes endless amounts of time to access the care that we have earned.

The same banks that profit off the wars, that profit off our deaths, wounds, suffering and time away from our families, target us when we return home. USA Today reported Feb. 4 that more than 20,000 veterans, active-duty troops and reservists who took out “special” government-backed mortgages had their homes taken away last year—the highest number since 2003.

We can clearly see in the wake of the destruction wreaked upon the people of Iraq and Afghanistan the effects that these wars and occupations are having on us at home. We can clearly see that this government does not care about its own vets. So why are we still in a love affair with the idea that it ever cared about liberating the peoples of Iraq and Afghanistan?

Just imagine the price we pay for the wars—$700 million a day—being pumped back into programs to fund real human needs, not the profit drive of big banks, weapons contractors and oil giants.

Defiling God will lead to an unhappy and miserable life.

Facts: devastation, from killings to tornados, earthquakes, with countries fighting with each other and those coming here to the United States bombing our buildings and much more to come. How can I say this? It is written in Mark 13:8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. As I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s we never had the Donald Trump’s and Palin’s or those fighting to keep God out of the schools and coming against the president and trying to enforce this country their way and not God’s way.

We are slowly replacing God everyday with our own needs and wants and the outcome is the results that are taking place today. All, in all I would not or could not change anyone as I do not have the power, but we are all responsible for our actions as a country which was founded on Jesus at one time. The time is now to pull here in the United States by helping our own people from New Orleans, Tuscaloosa to the homeless in our own backyard across America. What I am saying is what God has commanded in Proverbs 28:27 those who give to the poor will lack nothing,

but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.

What I have learned in my fifty years of life is when you defined God there is a price to pay and many have died doing it their own way and not the way designed by the loving God. And why? What an awesome life; being at peace by caring and loving your neighbors, family and surroundings and giving to those who need you and doing its God way. So why do we fight God? But they come in the name of the Queen and the world gives ear and their money. My travels in life has had its ups and downs, and many I have met will not help the poor nor the homeless but; you know what I have learned in this life; is that those whom will not help are the same people that when they are lost or hurt come to me, to ask for prayer so you see my travels and my mission is far from lost. Today, it is foolish for men and women to live with their head in the sand when it comes to their future. All marriages end one of two ways--Either by death or divorce. I have heard the following statement quoted and repeated time and time again, "We are all just one paycheck away from becoming homeless." Yet, most people play Russian Roulette with their futures, refusing to acknowledge that a sudden illness or a loss of a job could create a chain of events that ultimately can lead to homelessness.

For those who are now finding themselves homeless, I am truly saddened. Yet, there were thousands of things that could have done before getting to that point. Utilizing these options could have kept many from becoming homeless. These are the issues that need to be addressed today: What to do before you become homeless.
The first, and most important point is a reality check. Homelessness is happening to middle and upper-middle class white collar workers at an ever increasing rate. Even corporate executives and professional people are being hit hard by this phenomena. The reality check is the most important way to prevent the problem and should be done long before the crisis arises.

I believe it starts with too much house. From my research I have found that most families purchase homes that require two incomes to maintain. That is the first, and most crucial link along the homeless chain of events. Whether because of ego, or through social pressures, or status seeking, or denial, many of us today relate self worth through possessions and image. This faulty way of thinking sets people up for financial trouble, not to mention, produces stress and worry that often breaks up families, rather than bringing them together.

The old criteria used for figuring budgets is, even today, a wise path to follow: Spend no more than 25% of your income on housing. Make sure that it is net income, not gross. Trying to keep up with the Jones never brought happiness to anyone but the Jones. For married, as well as single women and men, it is crucial to plan ahead. What if , is an important question to ask yourself. What if your husband died? What if you got a divorce? What if you or your husband became ill? What if the medical bills ate all your savings? There are many questions that need to be answered. We talk about keeping a nest egg for emergencies, yet me don't take the time to create an emergency plan that can be implemented before a situation becomes a crisis. Waiting until the family is emerged in the crisis is too late. Most of the energy needed to make the critical decisions is being used up in just surviving. So, ask yourself the important questions. Decide what your savings goals are. Decide how long you try to maintain the status quo before you start to really act on your emergency plan. Do you try to maintain your normal living standard or do you put the house up for sell and try to get out from under it before it is taken away? How long can you survive on your savings before you must cut your losses and let your home go? What happens if you just walk out? Check out bankruptcy laws ahead of time. Talk to family members and ask for their input. Check with relatives and ask them for a commitment if such a crisis should hit. Can you stay with Mom, or Grandma, or Aunt Jane? In 2010, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty estimated that 4.3 million people in America (1.53 million of them children), were likely to experience homelessness in a given year. While difficult to measure, the increase in the demand for shelter beds each year is a strong indicator that homelessness is on the rise, and not only in America. According to the United Nations, there are at least 150 million homeless in the world today.

If your heart has been gripped by the needs of the hungry, thirsty, strangers on the streets, here are four effective ways to help the homeless in your community.

1) Volunteer
The most productive way to get started helping the homeless is to join forces with a well-established operation. As a volunteer you will learn from those who are already making a difference, rather than repeating the mistakes of well-meaning but misguided novices. By receiving "on the job" training, our team in Brazil was able to experience the rewards of accomplishment right away.

A good place to start volunteering is at your local church. If your congregation doesn't have a homeless ministry, find a reputable organization in your city and invite church members to join you and your family in serving.
Consider partnering with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together with needy families.

2) Respect
One of the best ways to help a homeless person is to show them respect. As you look into their eyes, talk to them with genuine interest, and recognize their value as an individual, you will give them a sense of dignity that they rarely experience.

My most memorable times in Brazil were the all night stays on the streets with gangs of children. We did this once a month for a while, offering medical treatments, haircuts, friendship, encouragement and prayer. We didn't have a rigid structure on those nights. We just went out and spent time with the children. We talked to them; we held their street-born babies; we brought them a hot supper. By doing this we gained their trust.

Remarkably, these kids became protective of us, warning us during the day if they detected any dangers on the streets. One day while walking through the city, a boy I had gotten to know stopped me and told me to quit wearing my particular kind of watch on the streets. He showed me how easily a thief could snatch it from my arm, and then he suggested a better, more secure type of watchband to wear.

While it's wise to exercise caution and take measures to ensure your personal safety when ministering to the homeless, by identifying with the real person behind the face on the streets, your ministry will be much more effective and rewarding. Learn additional ways to help the homeless:

3) Give
Giving is another great way to help, however, unless the Lord directs you, don't give money directly to the homeless. Cash gifts are often used to buy drugs and alcohol. Instead, make your donations to a well-known, reputable organization in your community. Many shelters and soup kitchens also welcome contributions of food, clothing and other supplies.

4) Pray
Lastly, prayer is one of the easiest and most positive ways you can help the homeless.

Because of the harshness of their lives, many homeless people are crushed in spirit. But Psalm 34:17-18 says, "The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (NIV) God can use your prayers to bring deliverance and healing to broken lives.

The State of Homelessness in America report consists of four major sections. Chapter 1 chronicles annual changes in overall homelessness and homelessness among families and other subpopulations. Chapter 2 demonstrates how economic risk factors, including unemployment, have increased during the recent economic recession. Chapter 3 identifies some specific populations, including doubled-up people and youth aging out of foster care, that are at increased risk of homelessness and documents trends in the sizes of those populations. Chapter 4 identifies a series of states, including California, Florida, and Nevada, that face multiple risk factors for worsening homelessness. Key findings for each of those sections are presented here.
Key findings of the report on homelessness:
The nation’s homeless population increased by approximately 25,000 people from 2008 to 2009 (5 percent increase). There were also increased numbers of people experiencing homelessness in each of the subpopulations examined in this report: families, individuals, chronic, unsheltered.

A majority – 34 of 50 states and the District of Columbia - had increases in their homeless counts. The largest increase was in Louisiana, where the homeless population doubled.

Among subpopulations, the largest percentage increase was in the number of family households, which increased by over 3,300 households (6 percent increase). Also, the number of persons in families increased by more than 6,000 people (3 percent increase). In Mississippi, the number of people in homeless families increased by 260 percent.

After population reductions from 2005 to 2008, the number of chronically homeless people in the country remained stagnant from 2008 to 2009, despite an 11 percent increase in the number of permanent supportive housing units.

While most people experiencing homelessness are sheltered, nearly 5 in 10 were living on the street, in a car, or in another place not intended for human habitation. In Wisconsin, twice as many people experienced homelessness without shelter in 2009 as did in 2008.

It is widely agreed upon that there is a vast undercount of the number of young people experiencing homelessness. Underscoring this is the fact that 35 percent of all communities reported that there were no homeless youth in their communities in 2009.

As it has been stated, some people make the conscious decision to remain homeless. A nomadic life without burdens appeals to them.
However, most homeless people do NOT want to remain homeless. It's the insensitive stereotypes that have been formed about them that perpetuates their sense of worthlessness.

In today's economy, someone who works hard and is a decent person might end up on the streets. Sometimes there are factors in your life that are out of your control.
We don't know the personal stories about these people. Each of them have their own history and background which creates their character. Just because we see them on the streets, we assume they brought it upon themselves due to some "tragic characteristic" they've adopted.

Most homeless people have been homeless for quite some time. Changing their way of life is hard, as society practically shuns them. What they need is an Opportunity, not charity. Some don't have much education and are unable to help themselves. That is why outreach groups have been formed to combat this. Homelessness helps no one, most want a shelter over their heads and warm clothes with a warm meal. Many obstacles face a homeless people who attempt to start a new life. Most jobs nowadays require an address, contact information, references. How will a homeless person find these credentials? How they can start is finding a homeless shelter or some place to stay. Once their basic necessities are secure, they can educate themselves which leads to their elevation in society. There's loads of information out there, free of charge and legal, if you know where to look. School is the most popular option though, as you receive a diploma which improves your credentials.

Homelessness is a lamentable state of affairs which, given the current housing crisis, is touching more and more Americans every day. Unfortunately, given the historic stigma placed upon being homeless, many people that are on the verge of being homeless—or already are—don't explore the various avenues of assistance open to them.This only aggravates an individual's, as well as the overall, situation. With federal, state, and local initiatives to assist those who find themselves without adequate, normal shelter, being homeless doesn't have to be as tough—or as insurmountable—as it might first appear. Keep the following ideas and organizations in mind if you find yourself in the unfortunate circumstance of being homeless.

Discover All Available Safety Nets

The most important step in alleviating the pain and discomfort that accompany being homeless, is finding out exactly where the closest, most convenient homeless shelters are. There are a ton of organizations, of social, governmental, and religious orientation that can help you get off the streets and into a decent shelter. Take a look at the following list of sites, which will provide the most comprehensive ways to search for a safety net within your vicinity:

•The US Department of Housing and Urban Development's homeless person's resource page, at HUD.Gov/Homeless.

Swallow Your Pride

If you happen to have the bad luck to have lost your home—foreclosures are at an all time high, and are becoming a more significant cause of homelessness throughout the nation—you'll have to stand in long lines, answer uncomfortable or possibly humiliating questions (people's opinions vary here, but if you've come down from pretty high on the socioeconomic ladder, you might feel somewhat humiliated), and possibly even face the disapproving glares of passers-by.

Do not be disheartened by these realities, and learn to overcome your pride whenever it stands in the way of improving your situation. After all, many people that opine about homelessness in general have never experienced it, and therefore have no idea what it is really like to be homeless. There is nothing sadder than someone who languishes in misery, not because they have no alternative, but because they are too proud to seek out and accept help from others.

Prepare for the Worst

Sometimes, help doesn't come as quickly as would ideally be the case, and people out on the streets with nowhere to go should prepare themselves for whatever situation may present itself, especially poor meteorological conditions. There is nothing worse than being homeless during the winter months, and having a notion of how to protect yourself from the elements will be key to your survival. Consider the following steps:

•Dress with as many layers as possible. Put the thinnest layers, like an undershirt, closest to your skin, and keep the thickest layers, like a winter coat, on the very outside.

•This applies to pants and socks as well. Tuck in as many of the layers as possible into your pants, except for your outer coat.

•Cover your head with a thick hat; somewhere around 80% of the body's heat is lost through the top of the head, so cover it!

•Stay dry at all costs, as getting wet—especially with so many layers—can leach the warmth right out of your body.

•Seek shelter, whether under natural formations in the landscape, or under a bridge, stairwell, etc. Heat vents are never hard to find, and can make a huge difference for spending a night on the street. Trespassing laws play against homeless people, so beware of where you choose to go, and keep a constant eye out for security guards or police. Unfortunately, in several states it is illegal to be homeless.

Hunger and homelessness remain most pressing issues for US cities

A report by the US Conference of Mayors

1 March 2011: Hunger and homelessness are among the most pressing issues faced by US cities. During 2010 the number of people experiencing homelessness increased across major cities by an average of two per cent, while request for emergency food assistance rose by 24 per cent. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said: “Even working families are increasingly facing hunger and homelessness as a result of the crippled economy and rising unemployment.”

For more than a quarter century, The US Conference of Mayors has documented the magnitude of the issues of hunger and homelessness in American cities as well as efforts cities are making to address these challenges. The 2010 report ‘Hunger and Homelessness in US Cities’ which covers the period September 2009 to August 2010, shows the impact of rising unemployment and housing costs as well as low wages on America’s most vulnerable sections of urban society.

Asheville (NC) Mayor Terry Bellamy said while there was currently an historic effort to restore America‘s economy, the effects of hunger and homelessness were clearly evident in America‘s cities and urban centers.

Across the responding cities, the average increase in the budget for emergency food purchases was 18.5 per cent.

• Increasing SNAP benefits and providing more providing more affordable housing led the city official’s list of action actions needed to reduce hunger. These were followed by employment training programs and utility assistance programs.

• All but one of the cities expect requests for emergency food assistance to increase over the next year, with that increase expected to be moderate in 69 per cent of the survey cities and substantial in 27 per cent. One city expects requests to remain at the same level.

• Fifty-six per cent of the cities expect resources to provide emergency food assistance will decrease moderately over the next year; eight per cent expect them to decrease substantially; 32 per cent expect them to continue at about the same level. One city expects a moderate increase in these resources.

• Increasing demand and decreasing resources, particularly relating to federal and state budget problems, were cited most frequently by the cities as the biggest challenge to addressing hunger in their areas in the coming year.

• Over the past year, the number of persons experiencing homelessness increased across the survey cities by an average of two per cent, with 52 per cent of the cities reporting an increase, 36 per cent reporting a decrease, and three cities saying it stayed the same.

• Among families, the number experiencing homelessness increased across the survey cities by an average of nine per cent, with 58 per cent reporting an increase, 21 per cent reporting a decrease, and 21 per cent saying it stayed the same.

• Among unaccompanied individuals, the number experiencing homelessness over the past year increased across the survey cities by an average of 2.5 per cent, with 44 per cent reporting an increase, 39 per cent reporting a decrease, and 17 per cent saying it stayed the same.

• Among households with children, unemployment led the list of causes for homelessness cited by city officials. It was followed by lack of affordable housing, poverty, low-paying jobs, and domestic violence. Lack of affordable housing led the list of causes of homelessness among unaccompanied individuals, followed by mental illness and the lack of needed services, substance abuse and the lack of needed services, and poverty.

• Cities reported that, on average, 24 per cent of homeless adults are severely mentally ill, 20 per cent are physically disabled, 19 per cent are employed, 14 per cent are victims of domestic violence, 14 per cent are also veterans, and three per cent are HIV Positive.

• Across the survey cities, an average of 27 per cent of homeless persons needing assistance over the last year did not receive it. Because no beds are available for them, emergency shelters in 64 per cent of the survey cities must turn away families with children experiencing homelessness; shelters in 68 per cent of the cities must turn away unaccompanied individuals.

• More than seven in 10 (71 per cent) of the survey cities have adopted policies and/or implemented programs aimed at preventing homelessness among households that have lost, or may lose, their homes to foreclosure.

• Providing more mainstream assisted housing led the list of actions needed to reduce homelessness in the survey cities. This was followed by providing more permanent supportive housing for people with disabilities, and having more or better-paying employment opportunities.

• Officials in 72 per cent of the survey cities expect the number of homeless families to increase over the next year; those in 28 per cent expect it to continue at about the same level; one city expects a moderate decrease. Officials in 77 per cent of the cities expect the number of homeless unaccompanied individuals to increase over the next year; those in 19 per cent expect it to continue at about the same level; one city expects a moderate decrease.

• Officials in 48 per cent of the survey cities expect resources to provide emergency shelter to decrease over the next year; those in another 48 per cent expect resources to continue at about the same level; one city expects a moderate increase.

HUNGER

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that, in 2009, 14.7 per cent of American households were food insecure, meaning that at some point they lacked sufficient food for an active, healthy life for all household members. This represents the highest level of food insecurity since the government began tracking the issue in 1995. In 2009, 50.2 million people lived in food- insecure households, including 17.2 million children. Within this group were 12.2 million adults and 5.4 million children who lived in households with very low food security.1

Every city surveyed reported that the number of requests for emergency food assistance increased over the past year. Across the cities, the number of requests for food assistance increased by an average of 24 per cent. Nearly one-third (32 per cent) of the cities surveyed reported that demand for assistance increased by 30 per cent or more. The rate of increase ranged from 62 per cent in Philadelphia and 60 per cent in Des Moines to nine per cent in Boston, eight per cent in Phoenix and Dallas, and two per cent in Portland.

Among those requesting emergency food assistance, 56 per cent were persons in families, 30 per cent were employed, 19 per cent were elderly, and 17 per cent were homeless. (These categories are not mutually exclusive and the same person can be included in more than one.)

Nine in 10 of the cities reported an increase in the number of persons requesting food assistance for the first time. Among these, 68 per cent characterized the increase in first-time requests as substantial; 32 per cent characterized it as moderate.

Increased requests for food assistance were accompanied by more frequent visits to food pantries and emergency kitchens. Nine in 10 of the 20 cities able to respond to the question reported an increase in the frequency that persons visit food pantries and/or emergency kitchens each month. Among these, 55 per cent characterized the increase in frequency as moderate; 45 per cent said it was substantial.

When asked to identify the three main causes of hunger in their cities, most survey cities (88.5 per cent) named unemployment; this was followed by high housing costs (by one-half of the cities), low wages and poverty (each cited by 46 per cent), lack of access to SNAP (by 27 per cent of the cities), and medical or health costs (by 15 per cent).

Based on current projections of economic conditions and unemployment for their cities, officials in all but one of the cities expect requests for emergency food assistance to increase over the next year. Some 69 per cent of the survey cities expect that increase to be moderate; 27 per cent expect it to be substantial. One city expects requests to remain at the same level.

Based on the current state of public and private agency budgets, 56 per cent (14) of the cities expect resources to provide emergency food assistance will decrease moderately over the next year, and eight per cent (two cities) expect them to decrease substantially. Nearly one-third of the cities (eight) expect these resources to continue at about the same level. Cleveland expects a moderate increase in resources.
The cities were asked to identify what they expect will be the biggest challenge to addressing hunger in their area in the coming year. Most frequently cited were increasing demand and decreasing resources, particularly relating to federal and state budget problems.

HOMELESSNESS
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Annual Homeless Assessment Report found that, for the second straight year, the number of sheltered homeless families (a household that includes an adult 18 years of age or older and at least one child) increased, while the number of sheltered homeless individuals dropped. In 2009, approximately 1,035,000 individuals used sheltered or transitional housing at some time during the year, as did 535,000 people who were there as part of a family. Slightly more than 170,000 families were sheltered homeless in 2009 - about a 30 per cent increase since 2007.

Over the past year, the total number of persons experiencing homelessness increased in 52 per cent (13) of the 27 cities surveyed by the Conference of Mayors, decreased in 36 per cent (nine) of the cities; and stayed the same in three of the cities (Asheville, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis). Across these cities, there was an overall increase of two per cent in the total number of persons experiencing homelessness. The change ranged from a 26 per cent decrease in Des Moines and a 12 per cent decrease in Kansas City, to an 11 per cent increase in Providence, 14 per cent increase in Charlotte, 15 per cent increase in Nashville, and 26 per cent increase in Charleston.

The survey cities reported that, over the past year, the number of homeless families increased in 58 per cent (14) of the cities, decreased in 21 per cent (five) of the cities, and stayed the same in 21 per cent of the cities. Across the cities, there was an overall increase of nine per cent in the total number of families experiencing homelessness. The change ranged from an 81 per cent increase in Charleston, 36 per cent increase in Charlotte, and 31 per cent increase in Portland, to a one per cent decline in Boston, two per cent decline in Louisville and Norfolk, six per cent decline in Phoenix, and 38 per cent decline in Gastonia.

When asked to identify the three main causes of homelessness among their households with children, 76 per cent (19) of the cities cited unemployment, 72 per cent (18) cited lack of affordable housing, 56 per cent (14) cited poverty, 24 per cent (six) cited domestic violence, and one-fifth (five) cited low- paying jobs.

The survey cities reported that, over the past year, the number of unaccompanied homeless individuals increased in 44 per cent (10) of the responding cities, decreased in 39 per cent (nine) of the cities, and stayed the same in 17 per cent (four) of the cities. Across the cities, there was an overall increase of 2.5 per cent in the total number of unaccompanied individuals experiencing homelessness. The change ranged from a 46 per cent increase in Minneapolis, a 25 per cent increase in Charleston, and a 20 per cent increase in Providence, to a 17 per cent decrease in Cleveland, an 18 per cent decrease in Gastonia, a 20 per cent decrease in Des Moines, and a 31 per cent decrease in Sacramento.

When asked to identify the three main causes of homelessness among unaccompanied individuals, 31 per cent of the cities (eight) cited the lack of affordable housing, 19 per cent (five) cited mental illness and the lack of needed services, another 19 per cent cited substance abuse and the lack of needed services, and 15 per cent (four) cited poverty.

Most of us need a little help now and then. Help painting, doing the dishes, with homework, looking after a pet, changing a tire, or maybe with a financial problem. Very seldom do we fall into a situation that requires help to survive. You read about people that are stranded on mountains, lost in a wilderness, stuck in a cave, or more commonly, involved in near deadly accidents and need help getting out or getting well. Thankfully they are still rare occurrences.

When it comes to the homeless, needing help is an everyday occurrence. Yet the most often heard phrase is “Get a Job!”. Some help that is. This country will spend millions to get someone off a mountain that had been warned of the danger. We will send dozens of men with heavy equipment to get a horse out of a mud hole and every news outlet will feature it. We will organize fleets of ships and planes to hunt for a stricken boat with a missing man on the high seas.

Yet, when it comes to the homeless, other than those who engage in the homeless service industry and the homeless activists among us, there is little or no help when a homeless person is found laying in a doorway near death from freezing, or beaten half to death in an alley where he had been trying to sleep. Hospitals are even being accused of “dumping” homeless patients on streets near shelters. I can point you to many notable cases. (Homeless people need help. They need our help and they need it almost continuously. Consider this: If you have lost a job recently and as a result lost your home, you probably have friends and family to fall back on for much needed help. You probably have a cell phone and a relationship with a doctor for medical care and probably still have a car. You are probably not homeless long.

Most homeless have none of those things. Without a car they are stuck walking and that in turn reduces the range of where they can get help or a job. Without a phone, they have to rely on stores and the goodness of a clerk to make a call. When was the last time you saw a payphone? Many times the homeless can’t even pay to use one if they could find one.

Without a phone and a fixed address, most people could not get a job as those things are at the top of any application. No way to get a callback for another appointment - opportunity lost. No fixed address – no job. Some libraries deny a card to anyone without a fixed address. No library card, no Internet access. No clean clothes, poorly nourished, unshaven. How does that work – get a job indeed!

Nevada family fights for survival in down times 2011.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Tera Burbank pulls a frayed robe tighter across her body as she leans into the refrigerator, her eyes canvassing the modest offerings for something to pack in her daughter's lunch box. Burbank stuffs carrot sticks, peanut butter and apple sauce into a backpack and cajoles her son and youngest daughter out the front door and down the street toward the nearby elementary school. The meager lunch box offerings are just one of many painful struggles that the mother of three encounters every day while living under the weight of long-term unemployment and threats of foreclosure, hunger and loss.

Burbank and her husband, John Clark, epitomize the dreadful economic situation these days in Nevada, where a mighty construction boom has given way to a historic recession and a record 14.9 percent unemployment in Las Vegas.

Burbank and Clark are construction workers who have been out of work for more than a year. They live off unemployment and student loans. Bills go unpaid and minor spats escalate into tense threats of divorce. Their daughters are performing poorly at school, and guidance counselors and teachers blame stress. For Burbank, surviving means ensuring her children's success and protecting the one place they could ever call home. "It's our everything," said Burbank, 34, of the family dwelling. "They can take the car and we will eat cat or dog food. Come what may I'll keep that house."

All around her, Nevada seems to be falling apart. The Silver State that once plucked its wealth from deep mines and then glittering casinos has lost its swagger. The jobs crisis shows no signs of improvement. Plots of arid land reserved years ago for towering hotel projects remain untilled. Nearly half of the unemployed worked in construction.

A chunk of federal dollars — $39.6 million in November alone — provides much-needed stimulus in the form of food assistance. Roughly 322,950 Nevadans, or 11 percent of the state, received federal funds to buy food in November.

RENO (AP) — Reno's 100-tent homeless camping area won't be shutting down.

City officials say it's a matter of humanity and law that homeless people can't be harassed or arrested for lacking a place to stay.

However, the encampment will be under some new guidelines, written by a committee of 13 "tent city" residents and approved by homeless center staff and the mayor. The regulations are designed to ensure the area is safe and doesn't present a health hazard.

The tent city started about 18 months ago when homeless people who couldn't or wouldn't take advantage of the city's services were given permission to stay on Reno's homeless services campus.

Jodi Royal-Goodwin, Reno's community reinvestment manager, said the policy was meant to be a temporary measure, but with the growth of the homeless population and the closure of Reno's overflow homeless shelter, the encampment will continue.

"We'd like to have an exit strategy, but right now there isn't one," Royal-Goodwin said. "These people have to live somewhere. It's not a place to stay indefinitely, but we have an obligation to provide a place where it's safe."

Royal-Goodwin said some of the regulations suggested by the tent city "betterment committee" are stricter and have more dire penalties than the city would enact on its own and some suggestions may be in conflict with state or city laws.

The rules will be discussed by city staff and committee members, and Mayor Bob Cashell also will review them before they are in place, she said.

Some homeless residents have said they welcome the regulations, while others have said they worry the rules and enforcement will be arbitrary

As I did my walk today listening to my I-pod I was feeling broken and lost’’ then I said God on countless times many have told me to give up this fight for the homeless; and many times I wanted too but when God gives you a vision you can’t let it go! Some 190,000 families needed shelter last year, up from 159,000 in 2009, according to an annual survey from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. There were 595,000 people in those families.

Over the course of the past year, the number of people in homeless shelters dipped slightly to 1.92 million, from 1.8 million a year earlier. This translates into one of every 200 Americans.
"As a nation, we appear to be doing a better job sheltering those who might otherwise be living on our streets, but clearly homelessness is impacting a greater share of families with children," said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.

The economic downturn has most likely spurred the surge in homeless families, which numbered only 131,000 in 2008. Homelessness rises with job loss, said Mercedes Marquez, an assistant HUD secretary.

It's likely that many more homeless families are staying with friends or relatives and may wind up in shelters in the near future. Some 32.4% of adults in families who entered shelters in 2009 said they had been staying with relatives, up from 24.2% in 2007.

One reason for the overall drop in homelessness is the increased federal effort to help those chronically on the street. Nearly 147,000 long-term homeless were on the streets on a single night in January 2010, down more than 18% from a year earlier and nearly 39% from 2009.

Marquez attributes the decline to the construction of additional permanent supporting housing: Some 59,000 beds were added between 2007 and 2010.

Families need more help
Families also stayed longer in shelters in 2009, with the median number of nights rising to 36, up from 30 a year earlier. Most of these families are headed by women under the age of 31, and more than half of children in shelters are under the age of 6. But more families with two adults and more headed only by a father also fell into homelessness, indicative of the recession's toll, Marquez said.

By contrast, homeless individuals are overwhelmingly male and over age 30. More than 10% are veterans and more than 40% have a disability.

Homelessness is heavily concentrated in large coastal states, with California, New York, and Florida accounting for 51% of the single-night count in January 2009.

Nevada had the highest concentration of homeless people, with 0.89% of its population without permanent shelter. The state, which is also at the heart of the housing bust, is followed by Oregon, Hawaii, California and Washington. Meanwhile, Kansas, South Dakota, and West Virginia had the nation's lowest concentrations of homeless.

'Feed A Friend,' A Program To Feed Homeless, Shut Down By Houston Health Department

A volunteer group that distributed food to the homeless was shut down by the the Houston Health and Human Services Department, reported The Houston Chronicle.

Houston volunteers Bobby and Amanda Herring operated their "Feed a Friend" program undisturbed for over a year before officials shut it down. Amanda told the Chronicle that she was incredulous over the timing.

"I'm just really sad. I can't believe for a year we were right out in the open and never had anybody tell us to leave, to stop, to tell us it was wrong. I'm blindsided with it."The volunteers said that they cleaned up the surrounding area where they fed those in need. However, because they used food prepared by local volunteers in informal settings, their philanthropy wasn't up to code.

Kathy Barton of the Health and Human Services department told the Chronicle the reasoning behind the codes. She said that along with the food itself needing to be certified, it had to be prepared in a certified area as well, all for the good of the homeless. "Poor people are the most vulnerable to foodborne illness and also are the least likely to have access to health care."Along with the cost of bringing their program in line with city code, Bobby Herring told CNN that the permit would cost about $17 per day of operation. They rely on volunteerism and donations just to provide the food. Herring was unsure of where the additional funds could come from.

"There's no government funding or church funding. It's purely organic."
The Herrings are not alone. A battle erupted in Los Angeles, Calif. last year over the same themes.

AdvertisementIn June of 2010, members of World Agape Church were approached by law enforcement and health department officials after operating their Skid Row soup line for over five years. They were shut down due to lack of permit, like the Houston program.

After joining together with the Los Angeles Community Action Network, World Agape members connected with other activist groups that experienced similar treatment and claimed a perceptible rise in police citations.

Local public health officials maintained that the volunteer groups had inadequate provisions and disregarded safety regulations. According to the LA Times, LAPD Officer Deon Joseph equated feeding homeless persons with enabling crime and drug culture.

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry told the LA Times that she supported the law enforcement's position.

Unhappy with liaison attempts with their local government, community activists organized an event in protest. On Sept. 30, "The Right To Share Food Extravaganza" was held on Towne Avenue in Skid Row.

Volunteers distributed food and services freely, with no reported incidents of unrest. Local police and public department officials did not inhibit or shut down the event.

Michael Hubman, a familiar face in Skid Row, has been passing out water to the area homeless for over five years. He helped organize the event and told the LA Times that distributing food to those in need is a part of a citizen's basic freedom.

For some, being homeless sounds like a nightmare - for others, being homeless is pure reality. How many of you have witnessed a homeless person holding a sign up on the side of the road? You try not to look at them, you try to look the other way - you do not want to look into their eyes. They notice that you are doing this. They know that you do not want to look at them. Some choose to shout mean things at them, like "get a job, " or worse. They're just people that are trying to survive. Sure, you live in a world where you get up each morning and go to work, then come back to your home.

Yet, there are some that do not have this opportunity. They apply for jobs and get frowned upon. Not many employers give homeless people a chance to work for them. They are too afraid that they will take things from the company, when in all actuality, this may solve a lot of problems. In this day and age, we are seeing more and more homeless families walk into the shelters with nothing more than the clothes on their back and the shoes (if any) on their feet.

When you look at a homeless family, you see a family that has been stricken by sadness and parents that have been stricken with guilt. They feel as if they are the ones to blame for their children having to suffer. Some leave their children in the shelter in hopes that they will have a better life, while others choose to stick beside their children.

They may have become homeless because of a house fire. Their mother and father could have lost their job or maybe they had an addiction, but we are not here to judge them. We are here to lend a helping hand just like you should be doing. Below, we are going to look at some facts on homeless families.

When you take a brief look at the background of these families, you will see a high amount of traumatic stress. We're going to start by looking at homeless mothers.

Fact number one: ninety two percent of the homeless mothers have experienced some type of sexual or physical assault in their lifetime.

Fact number two: Forty four percent of them have lived outside of their homes at some point when they were kids. Of these forty four percent, twenty percent of them were put in foster care.

Fact number three: Thirty six percent of the homeless women have experienced what is known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at a rate that is three times higher than other women. There are three facts on homeless women. Now, we are going to look at some facts on homeless children.

Fact number one: Thirty four percent of the school-aged children that have been homeless have lived away from their families at one point in their life.

Fact number two: Homeless children are known for suffering from behavioral or emotional problems. These problems have an effect on their learning.

Fact number three: Homeless children that are between the ages of six and seventeen years of age struggle with a high amount of mental health problems. As an example, forty seven percent of them have depression, anxiety or withdrawal.

Now that we have gotten some of the facts out of the way, there are some other things we would like to discuss with you. Have you ever thought about how a homeless person would go about getting a job? What phone number would they give? What about their address? How are they supposed to get a house if they do not have a recent reference with a landlord and address?

There are many things, such as this, that we take for granted, yet, they are a big problem for the homeless. There are working centers that are giving bus tickets, message systems that are used for getting job calls and resume help. However, there need to be more than this.

Another obvious issue amongst these families is food. If this issue is not addressed first, then everything else will be in the back seat. There are some helping hands that have started community gardens offering their land to those who would like to grow their own food but do not have land in their name.

Those unemployed homeless people are frequently tagged as being lazy when this simply is not the fact. There are homeless people that would love to have a job, but they are faced with numerous obstacles that are impossible to get past. Then, you have to take into account their appearance. The appearance is unkept, their clothes have been weathered and they have not been groomed. Many employers shun them away.

Recently wrote to “American Idol producers to help here in America, as their efforts and good works for Haiti last year are commendable but we have a major problem right here in American that is affecting 4.3 million whom have no home and in many cases no food. Pressure on to get homeless people off streets and into work.

The end of rough sleeping must not result in homeless people entering into long periods of benefit dependency.The government made it crystal clear last week that No one left out, the strategy to end rough sleeping by 2012, must be accompanied by employment opportunities for everyone it helps.

In fact, its stated goal is for ‘the majority of adults who have slept rough to move into work within a year of them coming off the streets’.

Alongside extending and flagging up existing good practice, regional Jobcentre Plus managers will be told to link more homelessness organisations into their work programmes.This means options such as work trials and access to ‘pre-employment training’ should become more readily available to rough sleepers.

Hostels will also be encouraged to be much more proactive in helping homeless people find work – again, working alongside Jobcentre Plus staff. The plan states that at the moment many hostel residents are simply ‘unaware of in-work support’.

‘We want to test new approaches and pathways, including development of a new style of hostel geared towards supporting and stabilising people in employment,’ it continues.

‘These hostels should be a stepping stone, enabling residents to move on from rough sleeping into work or into alternative housing pathways.’

The plan will also encourage employers to take on people who have slept rough.

But several homelessness charities have warned that the strategy could have some major problems.

Grant Everitt, who runs Shelter’s street homelessness project, said there was a ‘danger that there is too much pressure to get people into work’. ‘For most people, going into work right now is not a realistic option,’ he said.

Mark Grant, deputy chief executive of homelessness charity Broadway, agreed. Many rough sleepers would need a lot of support before they were able to take up full employment opportunities, he suggested.

About 85 per cent want to work, but the rest are a long way from working,’ he said.

The current economic downturn might also make things much more difficult, he added. ‘When we get to an economic recession where do you put your focus? Those who take longer to get back to work? And the picture might be worse for migrants who find themselves unemployed and sleeping rough, some suggested.

A spokesperson for Westminster Council said the plan failed to address the ‘plight of new migrants and other groups such as failed asylum seekers, who have no recourse to public funds’.

Such groups made up a third of the people sleeping rough on its streets each night, he said.

But Communities and Local Government department rough sleeping advisor Neil Moreland said the strategy made it clear the government would not ‘just rely on counts’ but use the information collected to tackle wider issues – like unemployment and access to services. ‘The right kind of data will inform what we do,’ he said. As many as 3.9 million Americans are homeless each year. Of these, more than 1 million are children and on any given night, more than 400,000 children are homeless.

While the general impression is that the homeless are primarily the chronic and episodic, those unfortunate individuals often seen living on the streets in the downtown areas of our cities, the fact is that more than half the homeless are families with children. The vast majority of these have been thrust into homelessness by a life altering event or series of events that were unexpected and unplanned for. Contrary to the belief that homelessness is primarily the result of major traumatic events or physical and mental disabilities, there are many top causes of homelessness in America.

Homelessness is, in fact, caused by tragic life occurrences like the loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence, divorce and family disputes. Other impairments such as depression, untreated mental illness, post traumatic stress disorder, and physical disabilities are also responsible for a large portion of the homeless. Many factors push people into living on the street. Acknowledging these can help facilitate the end of homelessness in America.

For those living in poverty or close to the poverty line, an "everyday" life issue that may be manageable for individuals with a higher income can be the final factor in placing them on the street. A broken down vehicle, a lack of vehicle insurance, or even unpaid tickets might be just enough to render someone homeless.

Divorce costs and the associated lowering of a family's total income can cause one or more family members to become homeless. For families that can hardly pay their bills, a serious illness or disabling accident may deplete their funds and push them out onto the street. Today, the rapid, unexpected loss of jobs and resultant foreclosures has caused great dislocation among families and has dramatically added to the number of people without a roof over their heads.

Natural disasters often cause current housing situations to become untenable and costly repairs are often simply not possible. The results of Hurricane Katrina stand in bleak testimony to the power of nature to displace people.

The great challenge for the newly homeless is to figure out how to return to their normal lives. Organizations that build emergency shelters and transitional housing typically work with a larger number of service providers around the country whose mission is to provide the services, such as job training, social skills training, and financial training, that enable these people to regain employment and return to mainstream lives. The progression for these recently homeless is to first be housed in transitional residences where they can learn these skills, to graduate to assisted living in affordable housing while they build up economic reserves and rebuild their employment resume, and then to graduate to full, market rate housing.

Many of these service provider partners are household names, such as Volunteers of America, Rescue Missions, and the Salvation Army. Many others are local organizations formed to address specific homelessness issues in the community. By carefully vetting the qualifications and financial stability of these service providers, organizations that build emergency shelters and transitional housing are able to assure that their facilities are effectively utilized in the fight to end homelessness. ATLANTA -- A handful of Atlanta's homeless got a hand in finding work Thursday. But the job fair dedicated to helping them wasn't the first step in getting them on the road to recovery.

When we talk about Atlanta's homeless, images of those sleeping on the streets often come to mind. But many of Atlanta's homeless are actually staying with family, friends or in transitional shelters. Putting those folks back to work is the goal of one Atlanta nonprofit.

"We're looking to get hired and stay hired. Not just a job, but a career path," job seeker Natalie Lambert said Thursday.

Like thousands of Atlantans, Lambert has been hit hard by the recession. Under-employed and living with a friend, she's looking for an opportunity to make a better life. Her search has brought her to a job fair, sponsored by the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency.

After 30 days of job and life skills training, this is Lambert's opportunity to put her best foot forward. "At first I was a little complacent, but once I did get into the search, I just found it very difficult," she said. "Even temp agencies didn't have any positions for me to go to. So I found myself online at the library, Internet."

"It boils down to making the right decisions," said Gordon Ellis from the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency.

This is the first job fair the nonprofit has held. They plan to make it an annual event. But, it's just the most visible part of a long process for the people who go to them for help.

"They come to us and they know that they're ready to make a change," Ellis said. "So, it makes our job a little easier but it's still difficult because you've got to try to reverse some of the habits that they've had for six, five, two, eight years."

"Getting into ACSS has really helped me with confidence, with a great attitude to know that there's something better waiting for me somewhere," said job seeker Tamika Green. "So I am just very grateful for the program."

"I'm a realist. We're going to have another one next year but hopefully none of these clients will be there," Ellis said.

Homelessness dramatically elevates one's risk of illness, injury and death.
For every age group, homeless persons are three times more likely to die than the
general population. Middle-aged homeless men and young homeless women are
at particularly increased risk.1
The average age of death of homeless persons is about 50 years, the age at which
Americans commonly died in 1900.2 Today, non-homeless Americans can expect
to live to age 78.3
Homeless people suffer the same illnesses experienced by people with homes, but
at rates three to six times higher.4 This includes potentially lethal communicable
diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and influenza, as well as cancer, heart
disease, diabetes and hypertension.
Homeless persons die from illnesses that can be treated or prevented. Crowded,
poorly-ventilated living conditions, found in many shelters, promote the spread of
communicable diseases. Research shows that risk of death on the streets is only
moderately affected by substance abuse or mental illness, which must also be
understood as health problems. Physical health conditions such as heart problems
or cancer are more likely to lead to an early death for homeless persons. The
difficulty getting rest, maintaining medications, eating well, staying clean and
staying warm prolong and exacerbate illnesses, sometimes to the point where they
are life threatening.

areas, homeless persons with a history of frostbite, immersion foot, or
hypothermia have an eightfold risk of dying when compared to matched nonhomeless
controls.5
Homeless persons die on the streets from unprovoked violence, also known as hate
crimes. For the years 1999 through 2008, the National Coalition for the Homeless
has documented 970 acts of violence against homeless people by housed people,
including 369 murders of homeless people and 390 incidents of non-lethal
violence in 165 cities from 42 states and Puerto Rico.
Poor access to quality health care reduces the possibility of recovery from illnesses
and injuries. Nationally, 71% of Health Care for the Homeless clients are
uninsured,6 as were 46.6 million other Americans in 2006.7
The National Health Care for the Homeless Council works to end the deadly conditions
and injustices described above. We recognize and believe that
• homelessness is unacceptable;
• every person has the right to adequate food, housing, clothing and health care;
• all people have the right to participate in the decisions affecting their lives;

Just because you don’t see homelessness in a community doesn’t mean it’s not there. Homelessness is a national issue, affecting all fifty states. In the Big Bend Region of North Florida and around the country, both shelters and groups are working hard to assist these people who have nowhere else to go.

In a recent interview with the Big Bend Homeless Coalition, Janis Thibodeau, organizer of the Big Bend Homeless Coalition’s Speaker’s Bureau which takes people who are or have experienced homelessness around the Tallahassee region to speak about their experiences, revealed to DoSomething.org some of the hardships that these homeless people bear through.

“We have people who sleep on mats at the shelter and walk miles just to find a place to work for the day. There is no guarantee that they will find work, and usually the work is hard, physical labor,” stated Thibodeau when addressing some of the common misconceptions.

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, 3.5 million people in the United Stated experience homelessness in any given year. The top five cause of homelessness are

•loss of job
•lack of affordable housing
•lack of affordable health care
•natural disasters
•domestic violence
With the sloping economy, this has not been helped at all, with a 3% increase in homelessness across the nation.

“Just getting a job is really difficult. Sometimes the best we can help them is with resource guide, housing, and food,” Thibodeau said in response to being asked about how homeless people get back on their feet. “One of the most important things that you can do is when you see someone who is homeless is just say hello to them. Know that it could be you.”

Sometimes because of local ordinances against providing food to the homeless, such as laws requiring costly permits to conduct group meals, hungry people seek out food that has been thrown away. My name is Laura and lost my home and job and had no food for five days and found myself looking in dumpsters for food. If property has been abandoned, then it no longer belongs to the previous owner and taking it is not stealing.

In some cases, generally when trash is outside and expected to be picked up by the trash collectors, the courts have considered the trash to be abandoned property in which the person who discarded it would have no expectation of privacy. These were not cases about hungry people taking food. These cases were about police officers who, in gathering potential evidence from garbage cans, were accused of conducting illegal searches. When the trash is stored indoors or in a secluded area, it is often not considered abandoned.

Business-owned dumpsters, located on a business’s own private property and not shared by multiple businesses might not contain abandoned property. Dumpster companies provide lockable lids, so businesses can lock their dumpsters and keep their trash inaccessible can lock their dumpsters. Many businesses lock their dumpsters to prevent thieves from stealing account numbers and other private information.

Maybe the law should require that non-perishable food be bagged separately or that food be packaged against bacteria and labeled with the date. Crisis Ministry in Lexington is offering places to sleep to those looking to escape the cold, but with a limited number of beds, overcrowding has become an issue.

The Weber family has been staying at Crisis Ministry for almost a month.

"My daughter usually sleeps here, or me and my son will. And then my husband takes turns with the baby or the daughter and then my two oldest boys sleep on top." said Autumn Weber.

Autumn Weber, her husband George, and their four children, the youngest 10-month-old Shawn, have been living at the shelter since George Weber lost his job.

"As a man you are the role of supporting your family and when you can no longer do that, I mean you feel like the whole world comes crashing down." said George Weber.

George Weber says he's been looking for work, but nothing has panned out so far.

"I've got so much management experience. My resume is solid, I've been told that. But when it comes to being hired, it just hasn't happened." George Weber said.

Crisis Ministry has two shelters currently helping 9 families and 51 adults. Executive Director Gayle Whitehead says the long stretch of cold weather is driving more people inside.

"Because of the amount of beds we have in here, and this is basically the floor space that we have, we have had as many as five people on the floor, so we had to go to the dining room." Whitehead said.

Whitehead says the influx of people is starting to strain their resources.

"The showers, the hot water runs out quicker, your supplies run out a lot quicker, your light bill is a lot higher." Whitehead said.

With more freezing temperature expected Thursday, Whitehead says Crisis Ministry says they will do what it takes to make sure everyone has a warm bed who needs one

Homeless Teens Have Dreams But Nowhere to Sleep.

First may I say I serious thank God, for the rejection and trials I encounter when helping the homeless and that is; it makes me stronger and more determined to do what God has called me to do.

It's always a great day when homeless youth somehow nudge gaffe-prone politicians off CNN, however briefly. Today the Cable News Network featured a report on unaccompanied homeless teens in Denver, Colorado, of which there are hundreds. The story opens with Belle, an 18-year-old homeless prostitute whose bruised face betrays a recent beating, which she says from her pimp.

The young people — mainly runaways and foster care dropouts with street names like Magic and Gucci — frequently band together. One group calls themselves Juggalos, like fans of the band Insane Clown Posse. "Juggalos started as a family for outcast people that don't feel like they have family," one member says. "Other people see it as a gang but we just look out for each other."

Their refuge in Denver is Sox Place, a nonprofit drop-in center with the slogan "bringing the father's heart to the fatherless." Monday through Saturday, "street kids" can drop in for hot meals and ping-pong games. Thank goodness for Sox Place, though its existence begs the question: who should step in to prevent youth homelessness before it gets to this level where Sox Place is needed?

One pregnant 20-year-old says she hopes that her son, due in September, doesn't have to "deal with all this." The story doesn't show, though, whether the teen and her boyfriend are anywhere near transitioning to housing before the baby's birth. I'm guessing that's because the answer's no.

A young man named Gucci describes his future to the camera like this: "I'm gonna stand my dream in his face and I'm gonna shake his hand and I'm gonna say, 'tag along wit me.'" His optimism, along with the federal government's new directive to end youth homelessness in 10 years, is almost enough to make you believe he can succeed. Almost.

We all live day to day going about our own lives, going to work, caring for our children and families, paying bills, going on vacations and having dinner with friends and family. Here in Benton Harbor, Michigan, there are many homeless people living under bridges and at the riverfront, in abandoned homes, alleys, and throughout the city with no place to go.

I am a street Evangelist and have been ministering and working with the homeless, prostitutes, alcohol and drug abusers for several years. I am ministering mostly to people who are on the streets, in the Emergency Women's Shelter Soup Kitchen, Peter's House Ministry, Salvation Army, Homeless on the Riverfront, under bridges and wherever the Lord leads me.

To minister to the lost is not just about preaching the word of God and praying with them. It's about building genuine friendships, getting to know them and hearing their story and their heart and taking time to listen and accept them for who they are, just as Jesus Christ has loved us. Homeless people and those living in poverty need unconditional love from a caring community and churches that will seriously rise up and make a difference.

We don't need mayors, commissioners, and city officials and people who say they are going to do something to help the homeless and find them housing but do absolutely nothing. On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, the Trenton/Mercer Continuum of Care (CoC) will conduct a one-day event called Project Homeless Connect (PHC). Project Homeless Connect activities will run 9am to 2pm at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Trenton, NJ. We will provide a hot breakfast and lunch, access to services and helpful items. Homelessness exists every day in Mercer County. This event sponsored by community leaders and designed to provide housing referrals, support services, and hospitality in a convenient one-stop format for people experiencing homelessness.

Last January, we served over 357 individuals at Project Homeless Connect event. And last July, we served over 350 people.

It will allow the CoC to provide those people with much needed services.

The success of Project Homeless Connect is contingent upon communities joining together with local businesses, private corporations, hospitals, volunteers and a variety of providers to positively affect the lives of the homeless in Trenton and Mercer County.

On any given day we have over 627 individuals and 274 children homeless (point-in-time data 2010). This opportunity can help the homeless to move off the street and be connected with the services that can help move them out of homelessness. It costs everyone more to have these individuals and families on the street.

Then he found MCREST Rotating Shelter. I love the rotating shelter model. Basically a group a faith-based organizations come together to share resources to help hurting people. That sounds to me like what church should be all about.

Preface

I was a rich, “white” kid growing up in Connecticut, when I realized that I would not ever walk the paths of people who came before me. I mean, what was the point of learning other people’s lessons, anyway? I was in the talented and gifted program in junior high, but you know what? I found out that smart people get told what to do and how to behave, too. So, ever since junior high school, I secretly decided to follow the way that was the most successful for me. In the process, I left Judaism to become a born-again Christian. And I left my elite, college education behind me to spend about 2 ½ years on the road, living with homeless people.

Rest assured that I was never actually homeless: I could have called friends or relatives to bail me out of this journey that I was taking with America’s downtrodden. But I never did ask for a bailout. Instead, I stuck with living in homeless shelters, just so that I could write this book that you’re about to read. What I learned is that homelessness is a national disgrace – for the homeless and for us on the other side, who volunteer at shelters and soup kitchens in America. What I have concluded, is that homelessness must become a thing of the past if America has any chance of proceeding into the future with any clear, moral direction. Americans are scared of speaking out against homelessness. I think that they want the problem to just go away, but they are not willing to roll up their sleeves and find out why homelessness even exists in America. I hope that you will find this book to be trend- setting: Let’s finally talk about homelessness in America; let’s talk about poverty from an entrepreneur’s perspective; and, let’s get rid of homelessness without getting rid of the people who are homeless.

Welcome to a journey that I started back in May 2000. Welcome to the world of homelessness: Where social workers hoodwink the public into thinking that homelessness can be solved by tolerating it and throwing taxpayer money at it. Welcome to the world of really lazy, homeless people, who are just leeching off of the goodwill of others. Why Homelessness Is Dragging Down America’s Local Economies

Let’s admit it: No one likes to see a fellow American sitting out in front of the local mall, begging for change so that they can “get something to eat.” But the odds are that when people beg on the streets in America, they are simply using that money to buy alcohol or drugs. Face it – homelessness is a dead-end way of life, and no one gets anywhere by living in perpetual homelessness. So, why do we put up with homelessness in America?

We tolerate public begging and vagrancy in America, because we don’t connect this delinquent behavior to the stability of our local economies. We don’t understand that large retailers like Wal-Mart and Costco prohibit the homeless from begging on their property, and that’s one reason why American consumers choose to shop there – so that they don’t have to be hassled for change or sympathy like when they visit local businesses, who often tolerate loitering and begging for change right in front of their stores. For their part, local businesses are afraid to clear out the homeless from their storefronts, because they don’t want to be perceived as callous and cruel to the poor.

Nevertheless, America’s homelessness problem is dragging down our local economies, and it has to stop. In college business classes, students are taught that a consumer has choices in the marketplace. Well, why don’t we as Americans choose to be without homelessness in our own country? Why do we tolerate homelessness, when all these people are really doing is refusing to re-integrate into American society while demanding that the taxpayers feed and house them? I say that it’s time to make the connection between homelessness and the faltering health of America’s local economies.

Case in point: Have you ever been to a city that was a great place to visit, but you’ve told yourself that you would never live there because of the crime and the “street people”? Los Angeles is the first city that comes to mind when I think of such a place – one visit to Skid Row is an eye-opener, because the homeless are allowed to sleep in the streets, loiter all day and are given free food and shelter all the time. Another example of a city that promotes homelessness is New York City. A homeless person can get food and lodging every day in the Big Apple, guaranteed. How would you like to have that, without having to work for it? Wouldn’t it be great if you could do nothing all day, except walk around and socialize with your friends, and then at the end of the day, someone would be there to take care of your food and lodging? Well, that’s what is happening all over America today – cities and towns are willingly providing free food and lodging for homeless people who neither appreciate what they get for free, nor want to give back in some to American communities. Of course, in places like San Luis Obispo - where homelessness is not tolerated - loafers and vagrants are urged to move along unless they want to improve their lives by working at it and contributing to the city in some way like volunteering. And I’m glad that I live in San Luis Obispo – the attitude and intolerance of homelessness here is refreshing.

Anyway, I think that homelessness in America needs to stop. Perhaps this short book will give you some ideas about how to deal compassionately with a social problem that has lingered in America for too long. The time is now to stop homelessness, and the time is right to raise the standard in America for what is allowed by people who refuse to participate in American society in return for the freebies that we give them. Make sure that you understand that I am not opposed to homeless people, but rather I am against tolerating homelessness in America – it is a demeaning, social problem that we can no longer allow.

I think about homelessness as a business opportunity that helps others while I make money solving it; I think about homelessness as a way to instruct government on how to streamline their social service programs; and I think of homelessness as an opportunity to prevent the American public from being swindled by professional, non-profit agencies that take large donations for the poor, but use that money instead for their overpaid, salaried professionals, who are simply not getting the job done. And what is my purpose for writing this book? I think that whoever solves homelessness in America, will profit immensely in wealth and in the spiritual realm. I think that it is time to take our streets back from those who insist that they have the right to upset the general public with their overtly delinquent lifestyles. And we must do this quickly – think of how many lives might have been saved during the January 2004 cold spell on the East Coast if we as Americans had already found and implemented a permanent solution to homelessness.

God wants us to clean up vagrancy in America, and there is no time to waste. Homelessness can be stopped – but we must stop tolerating it first. Only then can we solve homelessness altogether. Finally, this book is dedicated to everyone who literally sleeps on the streets in America; to everyone who lives in America without knowing where they’ll sleep tonight; and to all the good people in America who still care that there are still fellow Americans who are mercilessly neglected in our country today.

Part 2
The History of Homelessness in America

We all have misconceptions about homelessness. It’s important to isolate where homelessness comes from in America, so that you can understand what I see coming when I observe a homeless person in the street. You see, homelessness goes way back to the days when America was still being settled by pioneers and new states. As Americans moved to the West to explore new land and exploit more natural resource opportunities, the original inhabitants of America – the Native Americans – were displaced from their homes. That was the first, real incidence of true homelessness in America. And I’m sure that you are also aware of all the hardships that Native Americans have faced trying to reclaim their ancestral lands, mostly without success. Once America was settled and cities continued to grow, homelessness became a problem that mostly African-Americans encountered, because many from this ethnic group were displaced after the Civil War from plantations in the South. As former slaves migrated to the North, especially in the late 1880s, they experienced a shortage in affordable housing and soon, social service agencies like the Salvation Army recognized a need, and stepped in to help those Americans who could not find a place in the American economy.

In the early 1900s, hoboes became popularized in American fiction, and their numbers swelled, as many vagrants found that they could live on the rails by jumping freight cars to get around. Of course freight car jumping still goes on today, but it is far more dangerous now than it was then, and of course, it is also illegal. The big turning point for homelessness in America came when the Depression hit in the 1930s: Millions of workers were thrown out of work – many came to places like Los Angeles and Detroit, and hoped that the big cities had work for them. Unfortunately, the cities were often worse for the unemployed than the smaller, jobless towns, because too many people had come to the urban areas looking for work – and that’s when the modern idea of the homeless shelter or mission really took root in America.

Since the Depression, America has gone through many economic downturns and wars that have continually added to the nation’s homeless population. After the Vietnam War, depressed and distraught military veterans made their homes on the streets, because they were unable to deal with the reality that they were sent to fight a war that could not be won, and the Veterans Administration was slow to help these broken soldiers re-integrate into American society. In the 1970s, drug addicts, alcoholics and the mentally ill have all increased in number, along with homeless veterans, creating a crisis in every major urban area in America. Although the GI Bill triggered the establishment of a series of other social service agencies in the 1950s, nothing has worked (today’s homeless population can walk into any county in America, and apply for food stamps and Section 8 housing). The poor, who don’t take advantage of government welfare services, tend to wind up homeless and a nuisance to the citizenry of every town, city and state in our great country. Make no mistake about it: Homelessness is for dropouts, plain and simple. And Americans should consider 2004 the best year in American history to either stop homelessness once and for all, or to just let the problem grow and grow and grow and grow and grow. Why? Because for the first time, America has a book like mine, that will help lead our country away from homelessness and poverty-related social problems, once and for all.

Why Christians Help the Homeless Population

No single religious group does more for the poor in America than Christians. There is the Salvation Army, with agencies in every state of the union; Catholic Charities has been helping those in need for years; there are Christian missions and homeless shelters all over the United States; and local churches sponsor soup kitchens everywhere. Any place that you go to in America, you will find Christians helping the poor. Of course, Christians are far from perfect: They tend to preach to the poor and blame them for being poor in the first place. Nonetheless, Christians give the most to the poor in America. And the answer to why they do this might surprise you – the fact is, Christians value life more than other religious groups. Perhaps that’s just a way of saying that Christians just can’t stand to see another human being suffer, and without hesitation - they will try to help the poor with donations, moral support and especially with prayer.

When I was traveling from homeless shelter to homeless shelter, I found out that Christian agencies were doing far better in helping the homeless than their secular, social service counterparts. Here is an article that got published on a Christian website in 2003 (worthfinding.com), about my experiences in Minneapolis:

“Jesus Christ: The Only Solution to Poverty”

It is two days after July 4th. I am sitting in a neighborhood park in Minneapolis, where The Gospel Light Baptist Church is having its annual picnic. It is a very small church, maybe forty-five people in all. And the pastors have the courage of Christ to open their doors to all who will enter. Saturday is another day in the lives of Minneapolis’ homeless: They wander the city looking for handouts and drug dealers. Come Sunday –which is today- they grab sandwiches from the back of a truck parked on Currie Street, down near the bus station. The owner of the vehicle is a good samaritan, who does more than his share to feed the poor. Too many homeless men have fallen through the cracks, and yet, there is always the hope that Jesus Christ will one day shine in their eyes, too.

Helping the Homeless – The Tendency to Judge

For some, the homeless offer an opportunity for charity and for self-reflection. Many people think the homeless choose that way of life. In some cases, this is partly true. Let me offer one illustration.

A woman I know has been living in the woods for 14 years. She grew up in a moderate-income home in North Carolina. She worked as a nurses’ assistant, had an apartment with her boyfriend. He decided to move to another town and she went with him.

When they arrived, neither of them could find work. They pitched a tent in the woods to keep expenses down. She got a low-paying job and he started drinking. He became physically abusive. The woman occasionally had seizures that interfered with her work and caused her to call in sick too often. She lost her job, her insurance, and the medication that held her seizures in check. She turned to alcohol to self-medicate.

The woman was finally beaten by her boyfriend to the extent she needed to be hospitalized for broken bones in her face and ribs. When she got out, local police helped build her a shelter in the woods. She remains there today, still self-medicating and caring for several stray dogs and cats.

Helping the Homeless - Aspects of the homeless
In a relatively small area around this woman’s camp there are 50 or 60 homeless, each with a unique story of why they are homeless.

Some are illegal immigrants.
Some are veterans.
Some are people who found out a low-paying job doesn’t come close to paying for rent, electricity, food, and medicine.
Well meaning people help the homeless: (Read stories here.)
Many people around here carry small bags of toiletries and non-perishable food, giving these necessities to the homeless they see at street corners.
Others give them Bibles, blankets, or tarps.
Some give them a kind word.

Helping the Homeless - What the Bible Says
The Bible speaks plainly about homelessness: “If any of your Israelite relatives fall into poverty and cannot support themselves, support them as you would a resident foreigner and allow them to live with you. Do not demand an advance or charge interest on the money you lend them. Instead, show your fear of God by letting them live with you as your relatives” (Leviticus 25:35-36 ).

"No, the kind of fasting I want calls you to free those who are wrongly imprisoned and to stop oppressing those who work for you. Treat them fairly and give them what they earn. I want you to share your food with the hungry and to welcome poor wanderers into your homes. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. If you do these things, your salvation will come like the dawn. Yes, your healing will come quickly. Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind” (Isaiah 58:6-8).

“Then the King will say to those on the right, `Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.' Then these righteous ones will reply, `Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison, and visit you?' And the King will tell them, `I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'” (Matthew 25:34-40).

So many people ignore the homeless, partly because they believe there is little they can do to “fix” them. And they are absolutely right. In fact, it is not God’s intention that we “fix” them any more than it is His intention that they “fix” us.

Jesus tells us that we are one body in Christ. Everyone -- rich, poor, every race, every age -- has a legitimate role to play in that body. We may go to a homeless camp or an orphanage or a rest home with the intention of helping someone else, but ultimately, we will be helping each other grow together into the body Christ envisioned from the beginning of time.

Our commonalities become striking when we knock down the false boundaries we have thrown up around our love. Think about it: every Christian is spiritually homeless. We live in temporary shelters, however modest or grandiose, waiting to take our places in the Lord’s mansion.

Family's Path to Homelessness

When the Sjoblom family realized they might soon lose their home in Matawan, New Jersey, Diane Sjoblom found the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) world wide web page and sent a message requesting help. Through email, letters, and telephone conversations, NCH has reconstructed their journey into homelessness and ensuing efforts to find living wage employment to improve their situation.
Russell and Diane Sjoblom felt fortunate. As superintendent of the Balmoral Arms apartment complex, Russell received $1,375 a month plus housing for his family. Diane worked part time at K-Mart and received a small stipend for assisting Russell. They were able to make ends meet and have enough left for hobbies and even a computer for their children, Russell Jr. and Alicia.
Moving heavy objects was part of Russell's daily routine. In January Russell's brother was helping him carry a refrigerator down a stairway when Russell's legs gave out. The refrigerator crashed down the steps, flipped Russell over, and crushed his back. He was diagnosed with compression fractures in three vertebrae and severe lower-back strain. He would spend the next five months in traction.

Russell began receiving weekly worker's compensation checks for $225. Despite a skyrocketing pharmacy bill and Diane's lay-off from K-Mart, they kept up with their bills. Even when worker's compensation reached its limit in August, state disability and Diane's new part-time job at Shop-Rite filled the gap until Russell could work again.

In October Russell returned to work on light duty. Soon after, however, he reinjured his back while working on a step-ladder. This accident would completely change their lives. Russell lost his job that December, and Diane, who had quit her Shop-Rite job to help when he returned to work, lost her job assisting him, since it was considered part of a package deal. What's more, the company that owned the complex began charging monthly rent of $685, plus electricity.

Although Russell again began receiving worker's compensation, they needed more money. Diane began looking for evening work, so she could bring Russell to doctor's and therapy appointments during the day. But none of the work for which she qualified paid enough to meet their expenses.

A National Shame: The Mentally Ill Homeless.

One of our nation’s greatest shames is the number of homeless people adrift in the streets and parks of our cities.

And of the estimated 944,000 people who are homeless on any given night, 40 to 45 percent of them have a serious mental illness. Most of these mentally ill people go untreated, and unable to work, live a hand-to-mouth existence out on the streets.

Senator Pete Domenici says,

No vision haunts America’s conscience more than the sight of the street people… The irrationality and anguish that grip so many of these individuals leap out during any encounter, whether in Washington or Albuquerque.”

This post, in response to Blog Action Day’s call to write about poverty on October 15th, gives an overview of the crisis of the homeless mentally ill. This post covers the following topics:

How many homeless Americans are there?
3.8 million are homeless in a year
The number of homeless Americans is hard to pin down, since homelessness is often a transient state, and due to the conflicting definitions of “homeless.” The best approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty in 2009, which states that approximately 3.8 million people, 1.9 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year and by the end of 2011 many perdict these numbers to double. This translates to approximately one percent of the U.S. population experiencing homelessness each year, almost 46 percent of them being children, according to the Urban Institute.

In early 2009, the National Alliance to End Homelessness reported a point-in-time estimate of 944,313 people experiencing homelessness in January 2008. This is the figure most often quoted in homelessness studies.

How many of the homeless are mentally ill?
Homeless people suffer from high rates of mental health problems exacerbated by living on the streets and in shelters.

40 to 50 percent of the homeless are mentally ill
An estimated 40 to 45 percent of homeless persons suffer from Axis I mental disorders in a given year, which include Anxiety Disorders, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, and schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, and severe personality disorders. Between 150,000 and 200,000 of the homeless have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. This is the equivalent to the population of any of these cities:

Dayton, Ohio
Des Moines, Iowa
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Providence, Rhode Island
Richmond, Virginia
Salt Lake City, Utah
At any given time, there are many more people with untreated severe psychiatric illnesses living on America’s streets than are receiving care in hospitals. Approximately 90,000 individuals with schizophrenia or manic-depressive illness are in all hospitals receiving treatment for their disease.

Substance use is also prevalent among homeless populations. In a 1999 survey, 46 percent of the homeless respondents had an alcohol use problem during the past year, and 62 percent had an alcohol use problem at some point in their lifetime. Thirty-eight percent had a problem with drug use during the past year, and 58 percent had a drug use problem during their lifetime.

Why are there so many mentally ill homeless people?
The plan to transition from mental institution to outpatient care failed
There was a movement in the 1960′s and 1970′s to deinstitutionalize many of those being held in state and other mental institutions. The plan was to create community health centers where the mentally ill could receive outpatient treatment, along with residential facilities for those unable to make it on their own. Needless to say, the plan failed miserably.

6 Ways to Help the Homeless in 2011.

In 2011, statisticians expect 3.5 million Americans will spend some time homeless. But there are many ways—big and small—that you can give a little hope to someone in need.

Here are six ways to ease the suffering in 2011.

1. Volunteer to Help Homeless Veterans

On any given night, 131,000 veterans are homeless. Many of the former soldiers suffer from PTSD, and the number of homeless vets from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is on the rise.

Volunteer as a mentor, legal aide or counselor at your local veteran service provider.

2. Tutor a Homeless Child

Across the world, 150 million children are living on the streets. In the U.S. alone, 1.8 million children go homeless each year. Homeless children change schools often, making it easy to fall behind. Each day a child is on the street decreases his or her chances of graduation.

If you're low on funds but have a lot of heart, you can make a difference by tutoring homeless children in your community. School on Wheels in Los Angeles is a great program, but if you don't live near L.A., you can call your local shelter to find a similar program near you.

3. Help Make Waterproof Coats That Moonlight as Sleeping Bags for the Homeless

In Detroit, 18,000 people are homeless. Veronika Scott had an idea to keep them warm on those cold Michigan nights. She created an Elements S[urvival] coat that is self-heated, waterproof, and transforms into a sleeping bag at night.

As part of her Empowerment Plan, the coat is made by homeless workers with the hope they will be paid, fed and housed to create these coats for others.

The idea is "jobs for those that desire them and coats for those that need them at no cost." The goal is to "empower, employ, educate, and instill pride."

4. Donate Goods or Volunteer at a Local Food Bank

Hunger is a reality for 1 in 6 Americans. Many struggling families have to pass up one or more meals per day. But you can do a lot by donating a little—time serving your community at a local food bank, or goods to those in need.

5. Light a Candle for Homeless Youth

Covenant House serves 55,000 homeless children each year. The organization has crisis centers across the country for runaway and throwaway minors who are in desperate need of a home. Covenant House also provides job training, parenting classes and educational programs.
Light a virtual candle and bring attention to the plight of homeless youth around the world.

A great team but I am very disappointed with Avalanche manager Brendan who had promise to help us raise much needed money to feed and shelter the homeless. Doing this time of the year many are asking for help but when we were promised and no response it really does unable us to do so much more this this holiday season for many in need. (For my, word is my word) May they continue to prosper and keep their commitment to any others they commit to and return what they so generous get in return.

Homeless..A 2 Year Journey to Myself.

A story of a woman that wrote to our site: when I read this, my heart was so touched and I thank, God for this lady and the MANY that have had experience's living on the streets and have come out of it. For the journey can be hard and sometimes deadly.

Our Story

Hi..I have seen books written about the Homeless.Mostly be people who "Visited" the homeless for a few weeks..Or, interviewed them..This book is ABOUT being homeless for two years..An everyday struggle, not only to make money to eat, but the daily situations. From Gang territories, to one of us being stabbed, to rainy weather, and even death of new friends. A murder on the beach one morning of a homeless kid, which sent fear throughout the homeless community.

I keep a diary of sorts while living in this..I felt like an outsider most of the time..I don't do any drugs or drink, and it was around me every moment of the day and night. It took awhile to gain trust from the "Oldtimers" there. But we did.

Selling our art on the Boardwalk daily helped to feed us.

The hard part was at night..Where to sleep that was safe. With gang battles taking place all around, the nights were at times a bit overwhelming. That impact on being safe was brought home when my boyfriend was stabbed and had 15 stitches in his back. We are not kids, I am 53 he is 42..It was an extremely hard time to get through.

We did. But not without learning more about ourselves than we ever imagined.

My art was my saving grace..Being from a family of artists, it was always there.But, finding my own style and comfort with it, was something I never would have imagined that would have happened being homeless.

The Impact

I would like the young kids to read this book.. They go out there (to Venice, Ca,) with images of Jim Morrison and the beach in their minds..The "freedom" they think they will find..It is not always like that..Alot of them find death.

Venice has been glorified in music and film..There are stark realities hidden in the darkness of the side streets.

I believe this is a book anyone can get something from. At times the daily drama read like a best selling fiction book..Except it was real, complete with everything from drama, to comedy, to horror, to insight.

What We Need & What You Get

The money I want to raise will give me the freedom to get this project going and make sure I have a roof over my head. I sell art on Ebay to meet my daily needs..This money would give me a break of sorts from that and concentrate on this book. Many people have told me I should write this.

I want to use the money to get this published and out there. Selling this book will not only benefit me, but a percentage of sales will go to "Bread and Breakfast" . A eating place just for the homeless in Venice..The morning meal there is sometimes the only meal people get that day.
